Read About the Good Works of Rotary accomplished During Cheryl's Year as President

The Honors were voted upon by our own membership which make them even more special.

Friends and Fellow Members,

This year I most wanted to achieve two goals: that of inclusion and to work with kids and the youth of our and other communities.  Inclusion meant I wanted all members to be included, feel welcome and respected and to feel they and their ideas were valued.   I humbly believe we achieved these goals together and I wish to list all those whose efforts helped to make this year a remarkable one for me personally and as a Rotarian.

Today I had the pleasure to present the following awards to our members:

Rotarian of the Year – Bob Nathan –

·         for his inspiring efforts, never-ending optimism, positive attitude and his passion for the Gift of Life.  I am humbled  by his energy!   Thanks Bob for being a wonderful friend and mentor.

Paul Harris Fellow Awards

·         Tom Licari – his humor and fun side do not  mask his big-hearted kindness.  His passion for RYLA has awaken this program in our club and drawn new attention to the youth of this wonderful program. Thanks Tom for being such a good friend and inspiring us all with your passion for RYLA.

·         Bob Nathan – you know why J

·         Eric Buehler – what a terrific job Eric did with the Community Service Dinner; almost single-handedly prior to the event and did such a great job leading his team the day of and also for his being a natural leader in Rotary and inspiring us  with his unifying spirit.  Thank you Eric, dear friend.

·         Dennis Ciano – was surprised to receive this award but no one else was surprised as he is so deserving due to his ALWAYS being willing to help, being at every event with a gentle humor and dedication to Rotary.  I do mean it when I say, events or meeting just don’t run the same when Dennis isn’t there.  Thank you Dennis and your amazing wife Merri, what a team:  we are so lucky to have you both as members.

·         I am humbled by the votes of the club to award me a Paul Harris Fellow as well.  Thank you for this honor.

·         Audley Haines – his generous donation of $1,000 earned him a Paul Harris Fellow, which I will be honored to present to him.  Thank you SO much Audley!

New Awards presented for the first time:

Quiet Rotarian Award –Dennis Ciano

·         I wanted to acknowledge Dennis in a special way; we presented him with a check for $250 to MADD in Dennis’ name in honor of his brother, Glenn, a police officer who was killed by a drunk driver.    What an honor to present this in front of Dennis and Glenn’s mom and Glenn’s wife Sue.

·         In looking for a different award that reminded me of Dennis’ participation in our club, I came across this Award.  Well deserving Dennis.

The poem that goes with it is:

·         The world is moved along,
not only by the mighty shoves of its heroes,
but also by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker."
- Helen Keller

True Rotarian Award –Eric Buehler

·         In thinking about who to me represents what a True Rotarian is, in a club of many wonderful Rotarians, my first thought was of Eric Buehler.

·         For the promotion of peace and friendship, he represents the TRUE spirit of Rotary in his everyday life.  Gracious, humble; he is a leader and a gentleman and I am proud to call him my friend, and this year’s True Rotarian Award recipient.

Committee Chairs all received a Certificate of Appreciation and my sincere thanks:

·         Gift of Life – co-Chairs Bob Nathan and Warren Goercke, Sue Zaccheo one of our newest members now represents our club with the Gift of Life.  (my poetry partner J

·         RYLA – Tom Licari.

·         Golf Outing – Kevin Fitzpatrick.  Great job every year.

·         Interact for East Islip – Kathy Cooney and what a wonderful job she does every single year.  The Interact students LOVE her and her passion is inspiring to all.

·         Programs – Russ Moran did a fantastic job and really mixed up the speakers and details and it really showed in the enjoyment members took this year.

·         Co-Chumline Editors – Merri Ciano and Susan Harvey.  I am proudest of these ladies who so easily show teamwork and sharing while doing  a valued and terrific job.  Thank you both ladies!

·         Vocational Chair/Holiday Baskets/Scholarships and my co-chair this past year for our amazing School Supply Collection – Karen Moss.  Karen faced adversity this year, and with her usual grace, showed everyone what an amazing spirit she has; in losing her home and car to last fall’s storms, her first words to me were, “we’ve got to focus on getting the holiday baskets ready!” without thought for herself.  Amazing…

·         International/Volunteer on EVERY project this year – Karen Sobel.  So willing to share her talents and knowledge for the good of others, Karen was a volunteer on every project this year.  Thank you SO much Karen for your dedication to Rotary.

·         Photography and Video Master – my partner in crime for our Year End video, Rich LaBella did a FANTASTIC job1  His photos are amazing, (I do think I blinked in every one though J

Rich thank you so much for sharing your amazing talents with our club.

·         Photography and Certificates for Interact Scholarships – Guy Edwards is great with photos and many don’t know that he does an amazing job with the letters and certificates every year for the Interact Scholarship winner.  Thank you Guy.

·         Sunshine/Polio/Book Club – Phyllis Ozarin.  Our dancing queen brings her own sunshine to our club and her passion for Polio is unmatched.  She is a blast as well as a member of our Book Club.  Thank you dear Phyllis.

·         IDEA Task Force – Pastor Mike Staneck just joined to represent our club and he stepped right up when the opportunity presented itself.  Thanks Pastor Mike.

Special Presentation to Martha McDermott will be in late July.

·         I have two surprises to present Martha with when she is able to visit our club which she intends to join.

·         Martha provided the wonderful photos of our own Tom McDermott to honor his passing and life as a Rotarian in our yearend slide show.

·         I wish to thank the members of my board this year whose professionalism, courtesy, respect to others and support of my Presidential year  and passion for Rotary made for a wonderful experience that I will treasure.

Subject: Congratulations Cheryl on a great year-looking forward to celebrating tomorrow night

Dear Rotarians,

For those of you who missed the meeting, President Cheryl gave us a great video with the help of Rich LaBella that really highlighted all of the good deeds our club has done!  I wanted to personally send out an email to say what a great job Cheryl has done, not only being a great representative for our club on the local and district level, but also by doing a great job of individually acknowledging and appreciating everyone’s efforts!  We have a great club and as incoming President I hope to follow in Cheryl and all other past Presidents footsteps.

Looking forward to the installation dinner tomorrow night.   Congratulations to Bob Nathan named Rotarian of the Year for 2012-2013!  The enthusiasm and the willingness to help others and living the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” is exemplified in everything Bob does!  Congrats again to Cheryl on a great Rotary year and congrats to Fire Ball Nathan! Well deserved honor!

See everyone tomorrow night!
