Guest Speakers: Judge William Ford is from the Suffolk County Drug Court and Leann McCabe and Vincent from Phoenix
House.
Judge Ford gave us an insight as to the drug court process works and how the courts work with outside facilitators such as Phoenix House.
He lived in Brentwood growing up and now has a family in the community. Judge Ford worked in the courts for over 20 years and in the
Drug Court since 2008 when he was elected. The process is part of a voluntary treatment program using facilitators like Phoenix House for
inpatient treatment care.
There were an estimated 60,000 matters in the last five years that Judge Ford has presided over. Suffolk County has the same population as
the Bronx so there are a lot of cases. They look for low level drug offenses (felonies and misdemeanors)- dealers do not qualify. Their focus is
to help people overcome addiction. Today, heroin is 90% pure and it kills people more because you do not have to inject it. You can O.D. by
snorting or smoking it. Part of the original plea is to also set up a jail sentence if the person does not complete the program. Phoenix House
works with the court system to ensure a safe place to recover and save lives. Families can be destroyed by addiction. They work with addicts
to personalize a care plan for the individual. Problems they face include not having enough beds and dealing with insurance companies.
Thank you very much Judge Ford, Leann and Vincent. You did a great job!!
