Guest Speakers: Past District Governor George Solomon spoke to us about the Haiti Desalinization Project.
George and his team went to Haiti to help people build water wells, build a school as well help them to build confidence and
self- reliance. In two and half days, dentists were able to do 150 dental filings and 400 teethe were pulled. Rotary helped buy
portable dental equipment to help make this possible. Doctors were able see 100 patients. From feet to teethe, people were
helped. The gift of life program has also helped in the Haiti project, saving many children.
The project was started in 2006. Our own Karen Sobel helped with the very first matching grant. There is a full time nurse,
Gerta, who lives in the medical clinic that now has solar energy which became important Sandy struck. The medical clinic also
has a guest house for doctors, dentists and Rotarians. George showed pictures of their quarters and it looked better than the
pictures taken of the bungalows at the Ryla camp from last year. George said they even had T.V.
The project started with matching grants and expanded to help children learn how to sew school uniforms and other clothes.
They learn about nutrition and how to keep clean water (down to the buckets they used to carry their water which once was a
problem). The village has Pastor Anges who helps over 100 school children but they need a bigger school and school well
which is the newest project.
The new school needs to be run by solar energy in case of future storms. They need $30,000 with $11,000 already having been
raised. The newest matching grant can help raise the amount to $45,000. It will benefit about 5000 people. With all the clubs
contributing, the goal can be met. It was a great presentation.
Thank you George, you did a great job!!!!
